OUR LAST POST AT THE LIST

Posted in Man I Love Films with tags , on May 16, 2011 by Kaiderman

After a year and a half of writing this blog, and well over 200 posts, I’m here to announce that this will be the final post at THE LIST. While it is very hard to say goodbye to this little blog that I’ve watched grow and grow over the past 18 months, I am very excited to launch my new website:

MANILOVEFILMS.COM

MAN, I LOVE FILMS is the brainchild of myself and Dylan Fields (founder of The Large Association of Movie Blogs and, the now also defunct, Blog Cabins). Our goal was to pool our resources, hopefully along with some other future contributors, and provide a movie website that could provide more content to our readers. While we may be a bit slow getting out the gate, we hope over the next few months to have a website where you, our readers, can come to satisfy all of your movie needs including, but not limited to, DVD and New Release Reviews, Lists, Interviews, Festival Coverage and so on.

So, while it is bittersweet to say goodbye to this blog that I love so much, I am looking forward to our new venture. However, the good news is, the site launches today and you can come over and started reading our content right away. The great news is we will have new content for you on a daily basis going forward. So come on over and check us out. You can do so by CLICKING HERE!!!

TO OUR FELLOW BLOGGERS: Everyone in my blogroll will remain in my blogroll on the new site. We are still fans and will continue our mutual support. If you could be so kind, please update your blogrolls to include manilovefilms.com.

Now, make the jump and please continue to be a part of our ongoing film discussions. You can also sign up to receive our posts via e-mail, follow us on Twitter and become a Facebook fan.

TOP 5 MOVIES: TONY SCOTT

Posted in Top 5 Movies with tags on May 10, 2011 by Kaiderman

We don’t normally do directors for this post. Why? I don’t know to tell you the truth but we don’t. However, I’ve been bagging on Tony Scott on my podcast alot lately for three reasons.

1. His films are starting to look the same.

2. He continues to make films with Denzel Washington, who happens to be a fine actor, but variety is the spice of life as they say.

3. He made a movie called Unstoppable about a train that gets stopped. REPEAT: They stop… the effing… TRAIN!

WOW! Did I just do a list within a list? I did. THAT JUST HAPPENED!

While these things drive me nuts, I hate speaking poorly of anyone who puts creative work out into the world. It’s too easy to do and it’s a tough business. So, I thought I’d take this opportunity to shed a little light on some of the man’s career highlights and present you with the Top 5 Movies: (directed by) Tony Scott. Here they are (in order):

5. THE LAST BOY SCOUT.

I’m not a big fan of Damon Wayans but this is a friggin’ Bruce Willis action film circa the early 90’s. How can you not dig it? Especially because it’s not one of his top tier films. Gets major bonus points, in my opinion, as well for this scene that I have always loved and you should too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKc8m0apNh4

4. ENEMY OF THE STATE.

AKA: THE CONVERSATION 2. Mainly because Gene Hackman seems to be unofficially reprising his role from the original film by Francis Ford Coppola. Also, another example of an early action film from a now very popular action film star. In this case, Will Smith. While it features a bit too much commentary on the horrors of Big Brother watching us, it also turns in a solid watch.

3. MAN ON FIRE.

… or the film with Denzel that worked. I don’t know why I like this film so much. Quite honestly, most of the cast (namely Radha Mitchell, Dakota Fanning and, DEAR GOD, Marc Anthony) really bug me. What can I say? It takes everything that Tony Scott tries to do in his films stylistically and just manages to use them in the right vain. It was also one of Mickey Rourke’s comeback films and features, the always fun, Christopher Walken.

2. TOP GUN.

Everybody loves Top Gun and I just did a whole rant on it for Val Kilmer the other day so I’ll keep this brief. Besides, I really only have to say Volleyball Scene!

1. TRUE ROMANCE.

Maybe Scott should work with Val Kilmer more often. Seems to be his good luck charm. Tarantino probably gets most the credit for this one but is by far Scott’s best film. And he manages to make it about as good as it could be, short of Tarantino doing it himself!

MY LIFE IN MOVIES

Posted in MEME with tags on May 8, 2011 by Kaiderman

This post is the latest brain child of, friend of THE LIST, Andy Hart over at FANDANGO GROOVERS MOVIE BLOG. I must say that he has quite good ideas when he organizes these MEMEs and has not disappointed today. The premise is simple:

Pick your favorite movie from every year of your life. It seems somewhat a fitting time as well considering I just celebrated my 33rd birthday this week.

I don’t plan on getting into too much detail on these. I’m just gonna list them off. I should say however that this might be the toughest list I’ve ever done. Some years were gimmes but others were very difficult. I could easily see this list changing over the years. But, for now, it is what it is. So, without further, uh, dew… here is MY LIFE IN MOVIES:

1978 – DAWN OF THE DEAD.

1979 – MAD MAX.

1980 – THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

HAPPY CINCO de KAI-YO

Posted in Humor with tags on May 5, 2011 by Kaiderman

That’s right, Ladies & Germans… it’s May 5th. Which means it is officially Cinco de KAI-yo. The day where the nation of Mexico celebrates the day I was born. Since it’s my birthday, I didn’t feel like slaving away over a post. However, I felt compelled to give you something.

I don’t typically spend a lot of time on youtube. The only videos I really watch on the internet are the kind you want to make sure are deleted from your history before your wife sits down to check her e-mail… just kidding, Honey [nervous laugh]. Where was I? OH! Sure I use it to get clips for the site, enjoy the occasional early 90’s gangster rap video and watch a cute kitten do something cute… who doesn’t? However, a friend sent me this hilarious clip last year and I felt compelled to repost it.

So, where ever you are, pour your favorite drink in a glass, throw it back, watch this video and enjoy my holiday!

IS IT JUST ME?

Posted in Is It Just Me? on April 29, 2011 by Kaiderman

… or have you ever lied about having seen a film?

The boys and girls over at /Film recently posted a list of the FILMS PEOPLE PRETEND TO HAVE SEEN. If you’re wondering, Godfather tops the list but you can see the full Top 10 by CLICKING HERE!!!

Now, I must admit that I have been guilty of this in the past. Not so much to save face or seem cooler or maintain my movie watching street cred. More because I want to avoid a rundown of the film (because I can typically tell you the broad strokes of most films I haven’t seen regardless) or the inevitable “You haven’t seen (blank)? How can you call yourself a movie fan when you haven’t even seen (blank)?” AKA: The most annoying film conversation ever.

The fact is that, being a movie fan, I have seen waaaaaaaay more films than most people. However, the shear number of films being released every year, the number of films in existence and their availability or appeal make it difficult. Nay, it is down right impossible to see EVERYTHING. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to receive a diatribe from someone for not having seen a forgettable action film from the late 80’s or Charlie Chaplin’s entire catalogue or the works of Tyler Perry. Particularly based on the amount  of films I see on a weekly basis (which is impressive) and especially not from someone who usually has yet to see The King’s Speech or The Dark Knight or some other much more popular, mainstream and easily attainable film.

What I’m getting at is this… while in the last few years I have really dialed it back, there have been times when I’ve said things like “Sure, I’ve seen It’s a Wonderful Life. Great film!” Even though I haven’t and just to avoid the Bullshit. But what I’m wondering is have you ever lied about seeing a film? Which ones and why?

Or is it just me?
