… or have you ever lied about having seen a film?

The boys and girls over at /Film recently posted a list of the FILMS PEOPLE PRETEND TO HAVE SEEN. If you’re wondering, Godfather tops the list but you can see the full Top 10 by CLICKING HERE!!!

Now, I must admit that I have been guilty of this in the past. Not so much to save face or seem cooler or maintain my movie watching street cred. More because I want to avoid a rundown of the film (because I can typically tell you the broad strokes of most films I haven’t seen regardless) or the inevitable “You haven’t seen (blank)? How can you call yourself a movie fan when you haven’t even seen (blank)?” AKA: The most annoying film conversation ever.

The fact is that, being a movie fan, I have seen waaaaaaaay more films than most people. However, the shear number of films being released every year, the number of films in existence and their availability or appeal make it difficult. Nay, it is down right impossible to see EVERYTHING. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to receive a diatribe from someone for not having seen a forgettable action film from the late 80’s or Charlie Chaplin’s entire catalogue or the works of Tyler Perry. Particularly based on the amount  of films I see on a weekly basis (which is impressive) and especially not from someone who usually has yet to see The King’s Speech or The Dark Knight or some other much more popular, mainstream and easily attainable film.

What I’m getting at is this… while in the last few years I have really dialed it back, there have been times when I’ve said things like “Sure, I’ve seen It’s a Wonderful Life. Great film!” Even though I haven’t and just to avoid the Bullshit. But what I’m wondering is have you ever lied about seeing a film? Which ones and why?

Or is it just me?

… or is The Prestige a fantastic movie? I have to admit, while I don’t talk about it much, it’s one of my favorite films. A film I think suffered by the fact that it was the “little project” Nolan was going to crank out between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. A film that I think was overshadowed by the hype behind the then upcoming Batman Sequel. The Illusionist didn’t help either.

When I ranked Nolan’s films a few months back, I put the film in a tie for 4th with Inception and behind the Batman films and Memento. Yet, after watching it again, I think it might be his best film. It’s perfectly paced, delicately executed and one hell of a tragedy. It’s also, in my opinion, a bit more of a mind bender than Inception.

The film was well received. Don’t get me wrong. However, I think it is severely underrated (even by myself at one point) in the cannon of Nolan’s work. I think, in retrospect, I would put it #1 among his films today, if it wasn’t for a certain little character named Batman. But, my question is…

… is it just me???

Am I the only one irritated with the inclusion of Toy Story 3 in the Best Picture race?

Not because I don’t see why people think it should be included but for the fact that it totally sucks the air out of the Best Animated Feature category. I mean, Toy Story can’t lose in the animated category. If it did it would call the whole nomination process into question. I think it’s a damn shame and not just because I think How to Train Your Dragon is a better film!

I think we should keep animated films seperated… same with docs and foreign films… is it just me???

So, this is a few days late but very worth mentioning. Apparently, Anne Hathaway has been cast to play Selina Kyle (aka: Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film.

In addition to this revelation, it was announced that Tom Hardy, who was cast a few months back for an undisclosed role, will be taking on the part of Bane. He certainly can pull off the look:

For those of you that don’t know Bane, aside from the way he was ridiculously portrayed in Schumacher’s Batman & Robin with George Clooney, he’s actually pretty cool villain from Batman’s rogues gallery. In the comics, he even broke Batman’s back and nearly ended his crime fighting career.

I am super stoked about the Hathaway and Catwoman news but am a little depressed to hear they pursued the Bane route instead of bringing a Penguin or Riddler into what just might be Nolan’s last turn at the helm of this franchise. What do you guys think???

Is it just me or does going to the movies suck?

Our buddy Dylan over at Blog Cabins recently said he likes these posts but feels that I put out topics where everyone just agrees with me. So, here’s something I felt might be a bit more polarizing.

This holiday weekend I came to the realization that, even though I’m a huge film fan, I HATE going to the movies. It happened twice. My wife and I had planned to do a movie on Thanksgiving and ultimately passed because the idea of getting dressed, paying a bunch of money and going to the theater to see a film, that will no doubt be a much better rental, did not excite us!

The next day, I was tasked with seeing the newest Harry Potter film for my recent appearance on The Film Cynics radio show. While I actually really enjoy the Harry Potter films, the 2 and a half hour length of the film seemed a real turn off. I stuck it out but was happy to return home after like the Flash on Amphetamines.

The fact of the matter is I own a 52″ Samsung 1080p HD television that is attached to Samsung’s latest Blu-Ray model which happens to be situated less than 5′ in front of the “Daddy” seat on my very comfortable couch. I can pause the film anytime I want to smoke. I can drink a glass of beer. I can watch in my jammy pants and frayed Spiderman T-shirt. What’s not to like?

Not to mention, the going rate for taking my wife and 2 kids to the movies (at last count) was around $80. That’s with people sharing popcorn and candy. For that price, I can get the Blu-Ray disc of the film with the enclosed DVD and digital copies, a six pack of beer and have enough money left over to buy 40 bags of microwavable popcorn.

On top of that, I realize now that there’s only 2 reasons to go to the movies: 3-D and movies I cannot wait to see like your Dark Knights and Inceptions. However, 3-D is coming to the home slowly but surely and it’s only a matter of time before films are available OnDemand the day they hit theaters. So, what’s the point in even going? It really is more of a pain than an enjoyment. So, basically, my name is Kai, I’m a film fan and I hate going to the movies.

… or does this guy completely deserve an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor?

Anyone that’s seen Winter’s Bone can no doubt bet that it will most likely be this year’s Oscar Indie Darling. Jennifer Lawrence is sure to have her name thrown about when nominations come around and I think that it is well deserved but what about John Hawkes? Hawkes has been in Hollywood for a long time and is probably best known for playing weenie roles in films like From Dusk Till Dawn, Identity, The Perfect Storm and in shows like East Bound and Down. However, Hawkes channels his inner bad-ass in Winter’s Bone and turns in a solid performance that I think is well worth an Oscar nod.

I dunno… is it just me?

OK… you need to watch this! This guy (George Clarke) was watching the extras on Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus DVD. In the footage from the film’s premiere at Mann’s Chinese Theater is a shot of a woman, who is possibly a man, who appears to be talking on a cell phone. If you do the math, that’s not possible. He theorizes time travel. Regardless of what this is, even if it’s a hoax, I think the idea is so effing cool… is it just me?

Also, does anyone have the DVD so we can verify if the footage is real? OR… does anyone have any other theories?

This weekend on the very special Halloween edition of MILFcast (aka: the Man, I Love Films podcast), we are set to have a debate I’ve been waiting a long time to have… and I want your feedback on the issue. My guest, Nick Jobe of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob, is a firm believer that films like 28 Days Later are NOT Zombie films. I happen to feel quite the opposite…

Is it just me?

Or did this guy:

… replace this guy:

… as Hollywood’s new cool guy? No doubt Jack is still the King but he’s getting up there in years. And Clooney seems to be slowly taking the reigns as the most charming man in Hollywood. Even going so far as to be the life (and humor) of most award shows. What do you think? Is it just me?

Something popped in to my head a while back when I was watching Avatar. See the thing is that the Amp Suit from Avatar…

… looks just like the Power Loader from Aliens.

Then I realized that the ending of these films are EXACTLY the same. They feature a human in a human looking machine fighting an Alien. Only difference is that in Aliens, the Alien is the bad guy. In Avatar, the Alien is the good guy.

Now, Cameron has been quoted as saying he wrote Avatar before making Aliens. I wonder if he took the ending for Avatar and worked it into Aliens… and then recycled it nearly 25 years later.

Oh, and both films revolve around mining. I’m just saying… IS IT JUST ME???
