IS IT JUST ME…

Posted in Is It Just Me? with tags , , , on March 24, 2011 by Kaiderman

… or is The Prestige a fantastic movie? I have to admit, while I don’t talk about it much, it’s one of my favorite films. A film I think suffered by the fact that it was the “little project” Nolan was going to crank out between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. A film that I think was overshadowed by the hype behind the then upcoming Batman Sequel. The Illusionist didn’t help either.

When I ranked Nolan’s films a few months back, I put the film in a tie for 4th with Inception and behind the Batman films and Memento. Yet, after watching it again, I think it might be his best film. It’s perfectly paced, delicately executed and one hell of a tragedy. It’s also, in my opinion, a bit more of a mind bender than Inception.

The film was well received. Don’t get me wrong. However, I think it is severely underrated (even by myself at one point) in the cannon of Nolan’s work. I think, in retrospect, I would put it #1 among his films today, if it wasn’t for a certain little character named Batman. But, my question is…

… is it just me???

IS IT JUST ME?

So, this is a few days late but very worth mentioning. Apparently, Anne Hathaway has been cast to play Selina Kyle (aka: Catwoman) in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film.

In addition to this revelation, it was announced that Tom Hardy, who was cast a few months back for an undisclosed role, will be taking on the part of Bane. He certainly can pull off the look:

For those of you that don’t know Bane, aside from the way he was ridiculously portrayed in Schumacher’s Batman & Robin with George Clooney, he’s actually pretty cool villain from Batman’s rogues gallery. In the comics, he even broke Batman’s back and nearly ended his crime fighting career.

I am super stoked about the Hathaway and Catwoman news but am a little depressed to hear they pursued the Bane route instead of bringing a Penguin or Riddler into what just might be Nolan’s last turn at the helm of this franchise. What do you guys think???

RANKING CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S FILMS

So, my homeys over at Movie Mobsters posted a very interesting question on Facebook last week. Here it is:

Is Inception the best movie of the year and Christopher Nolan’s best film?

My answer to this was “yes” and “no”. Inception is by far the best film I’ve seen this year. Outside of animated films, it’s not even a close race. However, is it Nolan’s best work? I don’t think so. So, I’ve set out to do the near impossible and rank Christopher Nolan’s short but impressive filmography. As you know, Christopher Nolan was ranked #1 on my list of DIRECTORS THAT GET MY DOLLARS. The only filmmakers that come close in quality in recent years, in my opinion, again, are the fellas over there at Pixar. I love a challenging list so let’s do it. Here they are (in order): Continue reading

HEY, CLOCK… TICK FASTER!!!

I have to apologize because I would normally put a new post up today but I am faaaaaar too busy holding my breath. Keep your fingers crossed that this one lives up to the hype! If it does, being that it is an original screenplay, it could have a tremendous effect on the industry going forward. I think it will do fine but apparently Warner Brothers still feels the need to try and capitalize off  the success of the Dark Knight. What do you think?

Eerily similar, wouldn’t you say? Anyway, to keep you entertained until Saturday, allow me to share this audio of a recent phone call between Mel Gibson and Christian Bale. Just so you know, this may be one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard! Check it out:

HANDLING THE JOKER IN BATMAN 3

Let’s face it… Heath Ledger‘s passing a couple years back was truly tragic. It ranks right up there with my wife (Editor-in-Chief) having several drinks on a night out and then passing out right before happy fun time!

Seriously though, on the heels of giving one of the greatest performances in cinematic history, it truly is a shame. However, the franchise must go on. Which leaves Christopher Nolan and his creative team with the daunting task of how to proceed with the 3quel. After all, the Joker was supposed to play a huge role in the 3rd film as well. In my opinion, there’s 3 ways to handle the situation. I present them to you here: Continue reading

MOVIE NEWS: BATMAN 3

Posted in Movie News with tags , , , on June 11, 2010 by Kaiderman

Okay… more gossip than news but fun none-the-less!

Lately, the ol’ intraweb is blowing up with rumors that JoGo is being tapped to play the Riddler in the next installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. Seems legitimate considering they just filmed Inception together!

I know a lot of people have been hoping to see the Penguin in the next film but I think Catwoman and the Riddler make the most sense in the Nolan Batman universe… and I’ve been pulling hard for the latter (I was just having this discussion last night). Personally, I think Levitt would be great for the role…. what do you guys think???

DIRECTORS THAT GET MY DOLLARS

I’ll tell you right off the bat, Marty didn’t make THE LIST!!!

Let’s face it, Ladies and Germs, going to the theaters these days is getting more and more difficult. Ticket prices are getting so high, especially with all the IMAX and 3-D screenings (3-D tix in New York have risen to over $20 per), that for some movies I have to decide what I’d rather do… See a film or pay my electricity bill. A recent screening of Up, in 2-D mind you, with a moderate amount of snacks for my wife, kids and myself cost us about a hundred bucks. Even if my wife and I want to go alone, to see something with more mature content, we pay for a sitter and end up eating the cash either way.

This is part of the reason that I don’t do reviews on this site… well, that and the fact that I’m just such a film fan that I have a hard time disliking even poor films. So, I have resigned myself to seeing most films, in fact almost all films, when they come out on DVD. From time to time, a CG driven explosion fest, an interesting or critically acclaimed indie or a new vehicle for an actor I admire will get my butt in the seats. However, most of the time I don’t waste the time because I don’t really expect much from the films.

However, there are a few Filmmakers out there (under 10 probably) whose catalogue of work is so impressive that I know I can count on them to leave me feeling satisfied after shelling out a healthy lump of coin to see their films. For that, I thought they should be honored here, on what some are calling the greatest blog ever written (and by “some” I mean “ME”), with this week’s list: DIRECTORS WHO GET MY DOLLARS.

Here they are (in order): Continue reading
